What is an underground pet fence system?
An underground pet fence system is made out of three components. The first component is a specialized collar that the pet wears. The collar transmits an electronic FM signal to the second component, the transmitter. The transmitter is connected to the underground wire that is the pre-determined boundary. The transmitter emits a signal to the collar whenever the pet gets too close to the boundary.
How does an underground fence system work?
Whenever the pet has the specialized collar on and activated, he is not allowed to get too close the boundary and must stay in the safe zone. If the pet gets too close to the boundary a warning beep is transmitted to the collar. If the pet disregards the warning beep and continues forward to the boundary, he will then receive an electronic stimulation.
Proper Training Guide
Without the proper training of your pet, an underground fence system no matter how sophisticated it is will not help. That is why it is so imperative that you properly train your pet on an underground fence system. Training your pet is fairly easy to do. With the proper training you will no longer have to worry about your pet’s safety. With just three fifteen minute sessions each day for two weeks is all the training required.
The object of properly training your pet to use an underground fence system is to teach your pet that when he hears the warning beep that he better step back.
Below you will find a 4 step training regiment on training your pet to use an underground pet fence system.
*Note: A leash is required for the first 3 steps.
- The introduction to the warning flag and the warning beep is the first step of the training.
- As soon as the pet gets close to the warning flag and the warning beep is transmitted to the collar, stop your pet right there. Do not let him advance any further.
- Repeat the process a few times.
- The next step of training is to introduce your pet to the correction he will receive whenever he crosses pass the safe zone. The pet must understand that if he does not retreat when the warning beep is heard, that he will receive a correction.
- Take your pet to the boundary and let him cross it. This is done to show your pet of consequences of crossing the boundary. Once he crosses the boundary, guide him back into the safe zone.
- When the pet understands that crossing the boundary has a consequence, then it is time to really see if he truly understands.
- The Object of this step is to test your pet’s temptation on crossing the safe zone.
- Step on the other side of the safe zone with your pet’s favorite treat or toy.
- Tempt him to cross the boundary, if he does not cross, then your one step close to having a fully trained pet.
- The final step is to remove the leash from your pet to see how he responds when he is not supervised. Closely observe your pet from a distance to see how he is responding to the warning beeps and boundary.
- The first couple times you leave your pet unsupervised, it is recommended that you only do it for a few hours at a time.
- Over time increase the time he is unsupervised until you are able to leave him alone for an entire day.
Step one: Introduction
Step two: Correction
Step three: Temptation
Step 4: Final step
